What the water is like around Lake Chapala
The AguaScore map holds 125 monitoring points around the lake — municipal wells at Jocotepec, San Juan Cosalá, Chapala, Ocotlán, Atequiza and Mezcala sampled between 2012 and 2020, plus monitoring stations sampled in 2026. The water is very hard, alkaline, and most arsenic and lead readings are over the guideline.
Readings in the “very hard” range
Well readings around the lake average 199 mg/L of hardness, with a median of 213 — “very hard” on the standard scale, which starts at 180. Scale in heaters, kettles and shower heads is the everyday symptom.
Arsenic readings over the 10 µg/L guideline
59 of 71 arsenic readings exceed the WHO guideline of 10 µg/L (median 15 µg/L), and lead was over 10 µg/L in 33 of 35 readings. Both are reasons to treat the water you drink rather than rely on the tap.

The median pH is 8.7, which goes with the hardness. 36 of the 125 points (29%) score “poor”; the area’s average AguaScore is 73, a little above the national 69.
